The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
